Random Cricket Thoughts

This blog is about the sport of cricket. I'm Alan, a Californian now living in France, so my perspective on cricket is a bit unique.

Beautiful Slow Motion Footage

Cricket's a difficult sport to film, since the camera crew is usually pretty far away from the action, and the most interesting things happen suddenly and unpredictably. So it's worth taking a look, if you haven't already seen it, of this lovely slowed-down footage from the 2005 Ashes:

The World Cup 2007 is not looking the same without India and Pakistan. It is a great shock that the two neighbouring asian countries, known for their fierce rivalry and for the passion of their cricket fans, is not taking part in the tournament. They have been moved out from group stage matches. They have only themselves to blame as they played poor cricket and deserved to be knocked out. I think the players let their teams down when the whole world was watching carefully.

I am just hoping that the World Cup will get the rhythm again and become a lot more interesting in the coming days but the 2007 edition will always be remembered for Bob Woolmer’s murder rather than for the results during the event.

I have mixed feelings about the surprising results. Normally, surprising results are good for a tournament. I think the ICC has been greedy, though, and as a result the love of the sport is not spread evenly but is somewhat concentrated in those two countries. So the tournament suffers because the people who get the most excited by the sport are no longer involved.

For me, the long-term solution is simple: Take at least 1 regular cricket event (a 20/20 World Cup would be the best candidate for this) and make sure that it's broadcast live on free TV in every country that has even a single cricket club. It could be just once every four years. Even sports like rhythmic gymnastics, mogul skiing and ice dancing are showcased worldwide on TV once every four years. Why is cricket practically the only sport that you can never see without paying for it?
